About Us
What services do you offer?
We offer a wide range of services, including ladies’ and gents’ haircuts, colouring, hair extensions, and hair care treatments. We specialise in balayage, creative colour, and extensions while maintaining your hair’s health.
How do I know which service is right for me?
If you’re new to the salon or considering a change, we recommend booking a no-obligation hair consultation. Our experienced stylists will discuss your hair goals, face shape, lifestyle, and maintenance needs to give personalised recommendations.
Do you have a customer loyalty scheme?
At the moment, there is no loyalty scheme.
Do you offer pensioner or student discounts?
As our pricing is affordable, we do not offer additional discounts for pensioners or students.
Is the salon accessible for people with mobility issues?
Yes, our salon is partially accessible. There is one step up from the pavement into the salon, but once inside, the floor is flat throughout. If you need any assistance during your visit, please let us know in advance so we can help make your experience as comfortable as possible.
Location & Parking
Where is Hair Design located?
We’re located at 19 Park Street, Treforest, Pontypridd, CF37 1SN, just a short drive from Cardiff and Church Village.
How do I find the salon?
Directions, how to find us, and parking can be found here.
Is there plenty of parking outside?
You’ll often find free parking along Park Street. As many people just “pop in” to the nearby shops, spaces tend to free up quickly if they’re full. Please note that parking here is limited to 1 hour. While some clients have parked for longer without issues, others have unfortunately received fines, so we recommend keeping within the time limit.
There is also park and ride spaces at Treforest Train Station a 2-minute walk from the salon. A Premier Convenience Store is at the end of our road, has a small car park, and offers free parking, which is a 1-minute walk from the salon. There is also a small car park on River Street next to Treforest Veterinary Clinic, a 2-minute walk from the salon. River Street’s postcode is CF37 1TD.
Can I walk to the salon from Treforest Train Station?
Yes, it’s only a 2-minute walk from the station, making it very convenient if you’re travelling by train.
What public transport options are nearby?
Treforest Train Station is just a 2-minute walk away, and several local bus routes stop near the salon.
Appointments
Do you offer hair advice?
If you have not been to the salon before, or if you are looking to make a change, discussing your options is a good start. Changing your style or colour can be exciting, but daunting. You need to consider whether the style suits your face, whether the colour suits your skin tone, and how easy it is to maintain the look. These are all questions that we can answer for you. You can book a style/colour consultation. One of our experienced stylists will discuss your individual needs on a one-to-one basis, resulting in a personalised recommendation especially for you.
Should I bring pictures of my desired hairstyle?
Yes, please. If you have an idea in mind, then pictures of the colour you’d like to go, the cut and finish that you would like, or the up-do you want will help.
How far in advance do I have to book?
We do accept walk-in appointments. If there is no space in the diary, we may not be able to ‘squeeze you in’. It is advisable to book in advance, especially if you are going to have any colour services. Saturdays are our most popular day, as well as Thursday and Friday evenings when we are open until 7pm.
What happens if I am running late?
Depending on how late you are and the other appointments booked in, we may have to reschedule your appointment. If you are stuck in traffic and running a few minutes behind schedule, that’s no problem at all.
Do I have to pay a deposit?
For bookings in the salon, we do not require a deposit. However, we do take card details. Please see our late cancellation and no-show policy below. We may require a deposit for special services, such as brial or prom. These fees fall under our cancellation policy. Customers who consistently fail to show up for bookings will be required to pay in full when making a booking.
What is your cancellation policy?
If you have to cancel your appointment, we ask that you call as soon as possible. The more notice you give us, the more likely we can book someone else in instead. Customers who consistently fail to show up for bookings will be required to pay in full when making a booking.
What is your late cancellation and no-show policy?
Unfortunately, we have an increased number of no-shows and late cancellations. We reserve the right to charge 50% if you cancel within 48 hours of your appointment, and 100% if you do not show up. Your card details will be taken at the time of booking. We absolutely understand that sometimes unexpected things happen, and rescheduling adjustments become necessary. However, we do get extremely busy, so our salon policies and structures keep us super organised and ensure that our time is spent giving clients the service they expect, and nothing less.
Can I bring my children along?
Well-behaved children are welcome. We offer free WiFi, so they can bring their tablets to watch or read (please can they bring headphones?). We do have limited seating, so with respect, only bring those you need to.
Can I bring my dog?
As much as we love four-legged friends, unfortunately, we cannot welcome dogs into the salon, even if they are well-behaved or well-trained. Service dogs are welcome, but please chat to us beforehand, as we would not like them to get spooked by loud noises from hairdryers.
Hair Services
How do I choose a stylist?
We like to think we’re all pretty great! All of the team members are highly skilled and experienced. You can see everyone here.
How long does each service take?
It does depend on your hair type, thickness and length. On average, a cut and blow-dry will take 30-45 minutes. A full head of highlights around 1 hour, and 45 minutes for half a head, plus the styling. Semi-permanent or all-over colours take about 30 minutes, plus the styling. Hair up is anything from 20 minutes to 1 hour.
Is it OK to come to the salon with dirty hair since it’s going to get washed anyway?
Turning up with dirty hair is fine. However, if you haven’t washed your hair for two or more weeks or if it is starting to have an odour, then we would ask you to please wash it before coming to the salon.
If you are having your hair coloured, it’s best to do this on clean hair. This doesn’t mean your hair needs to be freshly washed that morning, but it should be free from heavy styling products like gels, oils, or sprays. Clean hair allows the colour to adhere evenly and ensures the stylist can see the natural texture and tone of your hair. Oils and buildup from products can create a barrier, causing uneven colour or patchiness. Additionally, having clean hair helps your stylist assess your hair’s health and condition, so they can choose the right colour formula and technique for the best results.
Do you offer a free fringe trim or reshape?
This is a service we offer complimentary for our existing clients. There is no need to book an appointment; pop into the salon, but please note that availability is subject to the stylist’s schedule. If you are a new visitor to the salon, charges start from £5.
What happens if I don’t like my hair at the end of my appointment?
Hopefully, as we have talked to you about the style you want, including the colours, cut and styling by the end of your appointment you will be pleased. We aim to provide the best customer service and want your time in the salon to benefit your wellbeing. If you are not happy about anything, we urge you to speak up earlier rather than later.
Please see our Complaints Policy for further details.
Do you cut children’s hair?
Yes, we do. For an adult, a trip to the hairdresser’s can be considered a pampering event or simply a necessary chore. Similarly, for children, it can be an experience that they look forward to or something they dread. Preparing your child for a visit to the hairdresser will help to avoid upset and enable them to benefit from the real-life experience. We love this Parents Guide For Going To The Hairdresser and would urge you to read this before you come.
Do you cut men’s hair?
Yes, we do. Lads, you’re more than welcome. In fact, some of our stylists excel in men’s cuts.
How often should I book hair appointments?
It depends on your hair type and goals. Cuts are usually every 6-12 weeks, colouring every 6-10 weeks, and treatments as advised by your stylist.
Can I book multiple services in one appointment?
Yes! Many clients combine cuts, colour, and treatments in a single visit. Booking in advance is recommended for longer appointments.
Colour Services
What is a patch test? And, do I have to have one?
Patch testing is a procedure used by our hair stylists and colour technicians before applying hair colour to the scalp. It is a safe and straightforward way of identifying whether the hair dye that the stylist intends to use will cause an allergic reaction with the skin.
Patch testing for hair colour is a legal requirement under section 3 of the Health and Safety at Work Act – so yes, you will need to have one.
I have had a patch test before in another salon. Do I have to have one with you?
Even if you’ve had a patch test at other salons, we still need to do one a minimum of 48 hours before your appointment. Patch testing for hair colour is a legal requirement under section 3 of the Health and Safety at Work Act – so yes, you will need to have one.
Can I come to the salon with unwashed hair if I’m getting it coloured?
If you are having your hair coloured, it’s best to come with clean hair.
How do I choose the right colour for me?
Our stylists will consider your skin tone, natural hair colour, and lifestyle to recommend shades that suit you. We can also provide inspiration from trends, our gallery, or social media.
Will my colour fade quickly?
It is normal for colours to fade, particularly if they have been applied to pre-lightened hair (hair that has been made lighter with bleach), or if the hair has been exposed to a lot of sunlight. In such cases, colours need to be topped up regularly to refresh the colour, and it will become longer lasting with time.
Also, the colour will last longer if you wash your hair once or twice per week, as opposed to washing your hair every day. It’s best to keep your hair protected by a sun hat or cap. Use sodium chloride/sulphate-free shampoos and conditioners to extend the life of your colour.
Do you do fashion colours?
What colour do you want to go? I bet we’ve already done it! Fashion colours have become one of our ‘things’ over the last few years. Check out our gallery for some of our recent work.
I have dark hair, but want to be blonde, can you help?
We would love to meet you and see your hair so we can give you correct and honest advice. If your hair is really dark, then realistically, it may take more than one visit to get it to the desired colour.
Can I get my hair coloured if it’s damaged?
It depends on the level of damage. Your stylist may recommend treatments first to strengthen your hair before colouring.
How long does a colour service take?
Timing varies depending on the type of colour, hair length, thickness, and whether you’re having a single process, highlights, balayage, or a full colour correction. Your stylist will give you an estimate when you book.
Can you fix previous colour mistakes or do colour corrections?
Yes! Colour corrections require a consultation so we can assess your hair and plan a safe and effective process.
Can I colour my hair if I’m pregnant or breastfeeding?
Many hair colours are safe, but it’s always best to discuss with your stylist and, if needed, your doctor, before your appointment.
Extensions
I have extensions, can I have a cut and blow-dry with you?
Of course, you can, you are more than welcome to have a cut and blow-dry with us if you have extensions.
What types of hair extensions do you offer?
We offer a variety of extensions, including nanos, tapes, and permanent options. Our team will help you choose the right type for your hair goals and lifestyle.
Can hair extensions add both length and volume?
Absolutely! Extensions are perfect for adding instant length, boosting volume, or both. They blend naturally with your own hair for a flawless look.
Are hair extensions suitable for fine or thinning hair?
Yes! Extensions can restore volume and create the illusion of thicker hair. Our stylists can recommend the best method to suit your hair type.
How long do hair extensions last?
The lifespan depends on the type of extensions, your hair care routine, and how well they’re maintained. With proper care, nanos and tapes can last several weeks before needing adjustment.
Will hair extensions damage my natural hair?
Extensions can cause damage if not cared for properly, but our stylists provide full guidance on maintaining your hair’s health. Using the right shampoo, conditioner, and leave-in treatments can help prevent breakage.
How long does it take to get hair extensions applied?
Installation time varies depending on the type and amount of extensions. Most appointments take between 1-3 hours. During your consultation, we’ll give you a realistic estimate.
How much hair do I need to have before getting extensions?
Most extensions require at least 4-6 inches of natural hair to blend seamlessly. If your hair is too short, we may suggest waiting until it grows to achieve the best results.
Can I get extensions for a special occasion?
Definitely! Many clients book extensions for weddings, parties, or holidays. We recommend getting them at least 2 weeks in advance so you can practice styling and care.
How much do hair extensions cost?
For a full price list, please speak to the team or book a consultation to discuss your desired style and budget.
How do I care for my hair extensions?
Regular brushing, gentle washing with professional products, and avoiding excessive heat will help your extensions last longer and keep your natural hair healthy.
Can I style my extensions like my own hair?
Yes! Extensions can be curled, straightened, and styled, just like your natural hair. Our team can show you the best techniques to avoid damage.
Do you offer consultations before getting extensions?
Yes! We offer 15-minute consultations to discuss your hair goals, choose the right type of extensions, and create a personalised plan.
